Botany is a discipline of Biology which deals with study of plants. Department of Botany at Gargi College is dedicated to teaching and research in all fields of plant biology. The department has well equipped laboratories like molecular biology and tissue culture lab (for carrying out practical classes and research work), a museum (which hosts plant specimens) and a botanical garden. The practical content includes chromatography, spectrophotometer, tissue culture, DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction etc. The course structure complements conventional branches of plant sciences with modern biology. The course also offers ample opportunities to choose from a wide array of specialized areas like horticulture, Industrial and environmental microbiology, Natural Resource Management etc. These features of the course help students to prepare for the entrances of post graduate courses like Botany, Biosciences, Biomedical Science, Life Science, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Toxicology, Bioinformatics etc. The Department also has funding under Star College Status and Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) from Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology. This enables students to carry our research projects during their undergraduate studies. The department also has a very active Botanical society named “TARU”, which organizes events like lectures by eminent scientists, extracurricular activities like collage making, salad making, quizzes etc during Annual Science festival of the college. The department also publishes an e-magazine called “ANTHESIS” where students can explore their scientific writing skills.
