English Literary Society – Events in 2015
English Literary Society, Department of English, Gargi College has organized three formal academic events so far, apart from the other non-literary activities, since July 2015.
A trip was arranged for the students of the Department of English of our college to attend a Brain Storming Session on ‘Translating India’ Project organized by Katha at their office on September 21, 2015. It was a part of the Katha-IGNOU initiative on ‘Translating India/Understanding Diversity’. 22 students from our department attended the workshop. They were accompanied by two teachers of the department. It was a great learning experience for the students and teachers, and many of them have been following up the events post this Orientation Session.
In the month of October, two events were organized by English Literary Society in college. On October 13, 2015, Upstage – the Dramatics Society of Gargi College, in collaboration with the English Literary Society and the cooperation of the Students' Union organized a Dramatic Performance in Urdu of Ismat Chugtai's story "Bichoo Phupi" (Aunty Scorpion). The performance was enacted by Mr. Vikram Singh Thakur (Ambedkar University) and his team, in the college Auditorium.
On October 15, 2015, English Literary Society hosted a poetry reading session - "Reading Poetry: An Interaction with Sudeep Sen" in the college Seminar Hall. Sudeep Sen is an eminent poet who has several volumes of poetry to his credit. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards for his poetry. The event witnessed a huge participation from the students and faculty of the Department of English, and other departments of the college. Dr. Anjana N. Dev chaired the session.
English Literary Society will organize several other lectures in the next semester, and the most significant event of the society is the Annual Literary Festival, Literati.
